An overdue update from week 2 - "The Disney Experience"

So now that we are home and things are starting to settle down, it is time for another update. The reason you haven’t heard anything from us was either lack of wifi access or the fact that Double Tree Inn in charges $9.99/day for wifi!
Shoulda’ stayed at a Hampton, it’s free!!

Anyway, I digress. I’ll pick up where we left off in Myrtle Beach. After we said our goodbye’s to my cousin and her family we headed south on Rt. 17 towards Charleston, SC. It was a nice drive as the road was not very busy on a Monday morning. We stopped a Cooter’s gas station along the way to fill up just because I thought it was funny.

Once we got into Charleston, we immediate changed direction to due west to find the closest Best Buy. The night before, we decided that it would be a prudent investment for my driving sanity to purchase a head rest mounted DVD player for Lexi. So we picked that up with a few Disney DVDs and headed on our way after Eileen made sandwiches for us.

Well, let’s just say that the DVD player was probably one of the best items we had in the Jeep that day. Ultimately the trip from Myrtle Beach to Orland lasted just of 10 ½ hrs due to construction traffic, and an accident on 95 South just past the Florida border. The CB radio came in very handy as I picked up the trucker chatter about it early enough that I was able to get off an exit before the traffic got bad and jump onto a few local roads to detour us around the problem.  We finally got into our hotel in Orland, cleaned up and settled down about 11pm.

The next day brought great excitement for Lexi.  But what can I say, I was a little excited to!  I haven’t been to Disney in almost 15yrs.  However, as a parent it is a whole different story.  After being in the Outer Banks for almost a full week, I wasn’t quite prepared for the mass hysteria and crowds of “The wonderful world of Disney”.  Eileen with her wonderful ideas, downloaded a great application from Undercover Tourist that helped us with our plan of attack.  Using that application, we avoided the busiest parks and got around the longer wait times.

We did have one little "issue" with Lexi at the park.  On Monday, we visited Animal Kingdom.  After we did a few attractions, we went over to a little hut to meet Goofy and Donald.  They both looked great as they were dressed up a park rangers.  Lexi walked right up to them and gave them high 5s and hugs.  We got our pictures and headed over to these two...

In the above picture, you will notice that Lexi is eying up Minnie.  Well, after we took pictures with Mickey and Minnie, they proceeded to give Lexi a kiss with their noses.  Mickey landed his on her cheek however, Minnie was not so fortunate.  Lexi proceeded to grab Minnie's nose and tried to pull her head off!  I wasn't looking at first but as soon as I heard the character's attendant gasp, I turned around, saw what was going on and whisked Lexi away from Minnie as fast as I could.  I proceeded to scold her and told her not to be rough with the characters.  I have to admit that I must have been a little too stern.  After that she didn't want to meet any more characters the whole week.

Just look at her reaction with Snow White:

We eventually overcame that sore event that day and continued to have fun.  And, we got a chance for Lexi and Eileen to take a picture with a few of their close relatives!

After that, we got a little hungry and dug into some turkey!

Yes, that is a 2lb turkey leg!

So we spent the next four days exploring the Disney parks and going on rides and eating and going on rides and eating and….(you get the point).  On Wednesday however, we did stay late at and saw the “Electric Light Parade”.  It was just as I remembered it from when I was 5!  A couple updates up still used the same music though!  After that, was the nighttastic celebration at the Castle where they lit up the night with a great fireworks show.  Lexi has told us since we got home that this was her favorite part of vacation!

After a busy week of Disney, we were all pretty much ready to get out of Dodge (Orlando that is!)  However, before we departed for the open road, we did a little time-share presentation we signed up for through Hilton and got $100.00 for our 2.5hrs of time.  Gas Money!!!!  After that, we were on our way out of Orland on rt 75 headed north towards Atlanta not knowing were we were going to sleep that night.

Well, that is the end of the second week of our trip.  There is not much to say about the whole Disney experience accepted it was jam packed with fun and excitement but tiring.
So that is it for now. Until next time; may the sun be at your back and the roads be clear!
