Road Trip Day 5-7
It has been an enjoyable past 4 days since we have last posted anything. Sunday we spent the day at the beach in Cape May and then another evening at Sunset Beach looking for Cape May diamonds and watching the sun set. While we were watching the sun set on a beautiful evening, One of the guys doing some surf fishing reeled in a sand shark. That was pretty cool to see. It was abo1ut 13 inches long. Of course being the good sportsman, they released it back into the water to live another day.
The next morning, we broke camp at 6:30am so we could get to the 8:30am Cape May - Lewes Ferry. Being the first time on a ferry for any of us, it was an exciting adventure. We had a great parking spot for the Jeep on the Ferry (2 cars back from the front). We enjoyed a soft pretzel and some water while we started our journey across the Deleware Bay. It was a fairly rough ride as there 2-3 foot swells. The ferry pitched back and forth for a while before settling down. Lexi has fun on the boat as there were some passengers with dogs that she was allowed to pet. We saw a few super tankers and containers ships going to to sea as we made our journey.
Once to Lewes, DE we disembarked the ferry and headed South. Of course being the first two days of the trip, we realized a few things that we needed to pick up to we hunted down a WalMart. I have to say that the Walmart was much different that the one at home in Harrisburg, PA. Everyone was actually pleasant! We picked up the items we needed and then headed on our way.
The next big thing was the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Lexi was in awe with how big the bridge was! As we headed across the bridge we saw some beautiful birds and great scenery. We stopped at the fishing peir/rest area for a few minutes for a nature break and continued on our way.
We took a small detour through Virginia Beach to check out what was going on. After a few miles of dealing with heavy traffic, signal lights and tourists, we decided to get back on the highway. It was starting to get late and there were some storms rolling into Norfolk.
On our way, down rt. 12, we stopped at a great farm market (Morris) for some fresh produce. This was a great little break as we have been in the Jeep for about 5 hours at this point. They had about 15 different kinds of cider to try. Everything from classic apple cider to blueberry, peach and blackberry. We spent a few minutes looking around, picked up some fresh apples, peaches and some great looking tomatoes. One more nature break and then back on the road for the Allwines.
At about 5:30pm we rolled into Kitty Hawk and continued south on 12 towards Hattaras National Seashore. About an hour later, we arrived in Waves, NC and our home for the next few days, KOA campground. This is a great campgournd and is right over the dunes from the ocean. It is a great facility with rather clean shower rooms.
We pitched the tent and headed out to find some dinner. OK, at this point let me just say, good luck if you want to find dinner at 9:30pm. We were too tired to cook that night. We ended up at a restaurant called Good Wings. Eileen enjoyed a spicy fish taco, Lexi had a nicely prepared grilled cheese sandwich and I enjoyed a great burger. As we enjoyed our dinner, we chatted with the waitress about the area and our trip and we also had the pleasure of meeting the owner. A pleasant woman that told us about the restaurant and gave us a few tips about the area.
After dinner, we headed back to the campground and finally got back to sleep about 11:30pm....AGAIN....
The next day, we spent the day on the beach and even with sunscreen I managed to get a nice burn by 10:30am!! We called it quits at the beach and walked back to the tent and got showers before heading out to explore the area. I gave Lexi a shower and I couldn't believe how much sand a kid's butt crack can hold!!
Afterwards, we headed back up north to Kill Devil Hills to visit the Wright museum and see the monument of the Wright brothers. It was a great learning experience for all of us. Lexi got to make two different paper airplanes with the group and we got to see the different landing distances of the Wright Flyer.
By this time we were all hungry and found Jimmy's Seafood Buffet. We thoroughly enjoyed (gorged) on an endless supply of 10 different kinds of crab legs. Afterwards we called it a night and went to sleep off the portions of crab we ingested.
Today, we plan on venturing north one more time. We are hoping we can make it up to the Corolla area and check out the sites in that area before heading back and restocking the fridge. Gasp! I'm out of O.J.!!!
Well, I have had just about enough of typing on the netbook's tiny keyboard, so that's it for today!
I hope everyone enjoyes their day and happy travels until our next update!
