Southern Hospitality at its finest!

So our first week of our epic adventure has passed.  The last two days have been filled with great adventure and a "few" miles of driving.  On our last evening of camping in OBX, we filled our bellies with generous amounts of seafood at Captain George's buffet in Kill Devil Hills.  After we got board of stuffing our faces, we began our last drive down route 12 back to Rodanthe and KOA.  As we were getting closer to Oregon Inlet, the sky spelled certain doom for us tent campers.  We pulled off before we reached the bridge to take some pictures of the storm and to catch some shots of the lightning.

We ventured  forward over the bridge and were greeted with torrential down pours and driving winds.  The waves and the blowing rain looked like a scene out of "The Perfect Storm".  Driving the bridge that evening was a two handed drive.  The wind was so strong that I was fighting just to keep it in the lane!  After the bridge, we pulled off at the Pea Island day use site on the other side of the storm to take pictures of the storm as it passed.

So we got back to the campground and found it still dry.  We quickly ran over to Kitty Hawk Kites so Eileen could get her sweatshirt she so desperately wanted.  But as we walked into the store the skies opened up and it poured cats and dogs.  So we hung out at the kite store until the storm passed.

Before we went back to the campground we finally had success in finding the storied house from "Nights in Rodanthe" called "Serendipity House".  The owners moved it from the ocean front as it was showed in the movie to just behind the dunes on Beacon Road.  You can now actually rent the house like any other vacation rental.  Here is a picture of the house with the storm behind it.

When we did finally make it back to the campground we found that the path behind the tent turned into a lake.  However, to our surprise, the inside of the tent was dry!!  My hat's off to Gander Mountain and the Guide Series tents!!

Saturday morning we broke camp and headed south towards Hatteras. It was a big day for travel.  It was two ferry crossings and 5+ hours of windshield time. We traveled south through Frisco and Hatteras to the Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry.  This was a SMALL ferry.  I think it only held 20-30 vehicles.  It was a short 40 minute crossing and the sound was calm.  Once to Ocracoke we drove straight to the second ferry crossing at Ocracoke (the only town on the island).  This was a slightly larger ferry and it took 2.5 hours to cross the sound. This crossing however, was where Lexi decided to have her second melt down of the trip!  I had to carry her screaming and crying down from the observation deck and put her into the Jeep for a time out.

We finally made it over to Cedar Island and began our journey to Myrtle Beach.  It took us a little better than 5 hours to make this drive as there were multiple nature stops and a lunch break.

We finally pulled into my Cousin's place around 6:30pm.  I can't say enough about my cousin Kathy's and her husband Jeff's hospitality.  It is truly southern hospitality at its finest!  We have a clean cool bed to sleep in for two nights and some nice air-conditioning to hang out in!!  We have offered multiple times to bring something but they just told us to bring ourselves.  It is great to see them as we haven't seen them in a while.  "Facebooking" and email just can't replace good old fashioned "face-time" with family.  We had a nice evening chatting and sharing some wine while the kids played in the pool.

We called it quits and headed to bed....a nice, clean, cool bed that is!  I was very happy to be able to take a shower without wearing my Crocs!!!!!  We woke up the next morning refreshed and not covered in sweat!!

Unfortunately, we have to get back on the road for Orlando tomorrow (Monday) but it is nice to be able to spend the time we could with them!  Not to mention that we had a chance to do laundry!

Until next time; Good day yall!
